Apart from all the other pretty useful stuff in the Technical Library on the IBM developerWorks site, I stubled upon this, which although aimed at businesses is probably largely relevant for home use too.
While browsing through, I noticed it advised that you migrate to multi platform applications (Like Firefox, Thunderbird, OO.o etc.) prior to migrating operating systems. Sound advice!
