After all the talk a few weeks ago about Linux distributions now accounting for over 1% of all desktop OSes, I thought I'd see if I could gather any data that might show it's more than that. Many people feel it is! Well, I'm not sure if what I've got proves anything really. What I did was post a poll on a couple of non computer related forums. I'll post the links at the end of this piece so you can see for yourself...
The one consistency across both polls is that 81% responded to say they used Windows. This is 7% less than the figure given by the people that brought us the news of Linux at 1.02%. My polls would seem to indicate that Linux and other OSes have about the same share with OS X slightly ahead. So, how to split up that 19%? Linux at 5%, others at 5% and OS X at 9%? That doesn't seem to be unreasonable given the figures I got.

As you can see, the total numbers of people who responded make the data pretty unreliable. However, that 81% does leap out as perhaps being significant...
