Wireless networking a problem in Linux?

In my experience, the answer to the above is no, not really! I've had great success with laptops with either built in or PCMCIA adaptors. My most recent wireless experience was with a USB adaptor. After some research, I bought an Edimax EW-7318UG to use with a system I'm in the process of getting together. More of that another time. Anyway, to test the adaptor, I pulled the Ethernet cable out of my main machine and plugged in the USB adaptor. After a bit of tinkering with the Mepis Network Assistant, I got a good WPA encrypted connection. If it was any more than a quick test to see how the adaptor works, I may have been tempted to install Wicd as I suspect that may have made the process even easier. At no time did I get anything other than the adaptor itself out of the box it came in. No messing with installing drivers from a CD, it Just Worked!

To me this shows that if you spend just a little time researching before you purchase, you'll have no bother at all with getting your Linux machine onto a wireless network.
