See Red in SuperUser FileManager

See Red in SuperUser FileManager

If you sometimes use Konqueror file manager in SuperUser mode, change the default text colour to red. That way, you'll know at a glance if you're in regular mode (black text) or exercising SuperUser powers.
1 - Open Konq with SU powers: KMenu > System > File System > File Manager - Super User Mode
2 - On the Konqueror menu bar, chose Settings > Configure Konqueror
3 - In the Configure window, click Appearance, then in the right pane click the black swatch labeled Normal text color. Change it to a medium-bright red. Click Apply and OK. That should change all the file listings to a red font.
4 - Make it stick: Go to the menubar Settings again and click Save View Profile "File Management".
Done!

Even redder

I stumbled across this trick after a couple of disastrous "learning experiences". While working as root is not normally advisable, this requires briefly logging in as root.

  1. From the kdm login screen, log in as root and open Control Center. KMenu > Control Center
  2. Click on Appearance & Themes > Colors and in the Color Scheme window choose a set of colors noticeably different from your current scheme. I use Desert Red.
  3. Click Apply, and close Control Center and log out of root.
  4. Log in as normal user and open Konqueror in superuser mode - KMenu > System > File System > File Manager - Super User Mode. You will see that SU Konqueror opens with the new color scheme, while Konqueror opened as a normal user retains the default scheme.

This trick has the added benefit that programs opened while using Konqueror -Super User Mode will also have the SU colors. ie. clicking on a text file will open KWite in the SU colors, reminding you to be careful. Text files opened from normal Konqueror by - right click on file >Actions>Edit as Root also have this effect.

NOTE: Updates of mepis-config can reset the default colors, so you may have to redo after an update.
