When I installed SimplyMEPIS 8.0 on my desktop, a Dell Dimension E4600, I took the distribution and added more than 3000 additional packages using Synpatic to create a distribution that allows me to use MEPIS for whatever task is needed for that day.
Effectively, I added the GNOME desktop, WindowMaker, AfterStep, and Enlightenment, as well as complete the KDE installation. I have installed the GNUstep libraries and a variety of programming languages, effectively creating my dream distribution with SimplyMEPIS is a base.
With 512MB of system RAM and 320GB of space, SimplyMEPIS performs beautifully, even with several virtualization packages installed.
Graphics configuration is not an issue either, even with a Samsung SyncMaster 932BW (a 19-inch widescreen flat panel display) working at 1440 x 900 x 24-bit resolution.
