Is programming an art or an engineering discipline? After so many years, programming still has a great mystique -- many of us get the feeling that we can start with the mysterious bits of code and build something -- it's much like making mud pies or snowmen, as we did so many years ago.
(With a Linux Live CD, we can take a dead computer and magically transform it into one that functions well.)
There have been few important works on programming -- "The Mythical Man-Month" is the first that comes to mind, and it's over 30 years old.
