Mepis 8 (RC2) on our home file/print/desktop server.

Well, I think I've got everything back to how it was with Mepis 7 at last (Better, even!), after the upgrade I did a little while back. As I had saved the old Samba configuration file before re-installing, sharing files worked pretty much as soon as I copied it into the right place and restarted the Samba daemon. I've also been running apps across the network using PuTTY & Xming a fair bit recently which is something I only recently worked out how to do reliably. The last thing to fix was printing... Although everything looked right with Samba and CUPS, I couldn't get the laptop to print on the HP D2360 connected to my Mepis box. Sure enough, everything was right on the server! I just needed to delete the old printer on the Vista laptop and add a new printer... It's always a simple, obvious thing isn't it?

Printing

It seems every time I do a cups upgrade or install a new Mepis version, connecting to my desktop printer remotely turns out to be an adventure. And every time it is a simple solution. At least I have learned not to mess with samba configurations to fix it. As you indicated it usually is fixed by installing the printer again or restarting the print server.
