My take on M8 to M11 upgrade. And a backup strategy!

Over the course of last weekend, I upgraded our family main PC from Mepis 8 to Mepis 11. As per a thread I started on the forums http://forum.mepiscommunity.org/viewtopic.php?f=84&t=30667, I had an initial hoop to jump through in that I needed a grub ‘cheat code’ to get the live DVD to boot. Once I’d researched the solution to that issue and got into the demo desktop session, the installation itself was typically unremarkable. What I want to go into in this post is the method I used to migrate home directories, or at least the actual useful data. Obviously, a direct copy of a lot of the config files found in /home/$USER* would be undesirable due to the migration from KDE3 to KDE4 that M8 -> M11 entails.

I just got a new HP Mini 110-3612. Clearly I wasn't going to put up with Windows 7 Starter running on it. So, the first time I powered it on, I made sure a USB stick was plugged in with Mepis 11 installed courtesy of Unetbootin. Mepis 11 installed perfectly, everything including the wireless adaptor worked out of the box. Now, I'm looking forward to many productive hours with my shiny new toy. :-D

My First Exp. with Mepis 11.0

Hello Mepis Community, yes I'm a linux newbie anyway i have been trying out different linux disto for about the last year or so and have not had very good luck with any of them.I have always wanted to use and learn limux because i really do not like Windows witch i have used for ever.But god has blessed me -MEPIS -i have been using mepis 11.0 for about a month now and i must say i am very happy this os is rock solid and set up on my system like magic i have been able to set every thing in mepis just the way i want it and i feel that it is time to say good by to the curse bill gates made cal

How to correctly upgrade Mepis 8.5 to 11!

WARNING!: It is recommended that when upgrading you must create a new username, do not reuse the old one, it doesn't matter if you use the same name or password from the old one!

REMEMBER!: Always do a backup of your important files, better safe than sorry!

I did an upgrade from mepis 8.5 to mepis 11 using separate /, Swap, /Home (in that same order) and choosing to preserve "/Home" option and all went very well, everything is working fine! :happy:

Finally I have found my home

After over ten years of increasing curiosity about Linux and distros based on the Linux kernel I have finally found my home and distribution. I am very impressed of Simple Mepis 11 and the professional community site. It has speed, stability and a lot more that you all are aware of. It works just as well on my Dell Latitude E610 (Though I need to increase the sound volume) as on My HP Mini with an Atom N450, I fees great to finally find inner peace after having tested dozens of distros and always ending up with a starnge system frezze or som other issue that leaves me with a negative feeling.

Probably stating the obvious...

If you want to run older hardware, it's better to start with antiX and build up what you want rather than start with Mepis and hack bits out!

My messed up test box!

My Mepis test box is in a bit of a mess at the moment! Pretty certainly due to it’s very nature as a test box and the way I’ve been abusing it… For that reason, I’m not inclined to post this in the forums asking for advice.
